Dear Dawn Dodge

Dear Dawn Dodge:

Thank you so much for the brochure one of your volunteers dropped in my mailbox the other day. I think it’s so wonderful how you make every effort to keep in touch with your constituents. I hear so many of those naysayers who whine about how they only hear from you at election time. I’m sorry to say that at times I’ve found myself being influenced by that crowd as well. I hope you won’t hold it against me. Even though I’ve seen more of you at an IceDogs playoff game at TD Place in Ottawa than here in our own community during the eight-plus years I’ve lived here, I’m sure you’re spending every waking hour making sure our best interests are represented on city council. As your slogan says, your Grantham includes me, and I’m confident you mean every word of it.

I’m so impressed by the list of goals you have for council. I couldn’t agree more about the importance of traffic calming, pollinator gardens and tree plantings. While we keep hearing those loudmouths who endlessly complain about high taxes and politicians who lay awake at night dreaming about ways to flush our money down the toilet, I know most in our community feel the same way as you do. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard the subject of pollinator gardens talked about around my neighborhood. It’s beginning to sound like a broken record. Pollinator gardens. Pollinator gardens. Thankfully, you’re one of those few politicians who get it, and I want to assure you I’ll be among many supporting your re-election bid so that we’ll have those vital issues brought to the forefront during the next term of council.

But what really grabbed my attention was how you propose to champion other issues of incredible importance. Affordable housing. Public health. Paramedicine. Long-term care. Community mental health and addiction. I’m so thrilled to see that you’re not one of those buffoons who keep going on and on telling us that those issues don’t fall within the city’s responsibility. Once again, you get it. You’re not one of those cowards who want to keep passing the buck. You understand that it is so much better to have two, three or even four levels of government tackling the same problems.

My heartfelt thanks for your selfless dedication to our community. It’s at times like this that I couldn’t be more grateful to have people like you in public office.

Sincerely,

Your humble constituent
