Canadiano

June 8, 2025

Recently, I was at, like, Balzac’s in NOTL when a middle-aged woman wearing flashy silver sandals approached the counter and while looking up at the menu, openly wondered what a London Fog was. Then, having ruled out the London Fog, she picked up a breakfast sandwich and also ordered a Canadiano.

What’s a Canadiano? I wondered. I’m not the least bit familiar with what goes into their high-priced gourmet drinks, but I thought I had at least heard of them all before. Perhaps it was something new.

I craned my neck around the corner and looked at the menu.

Turns out it wasn’t something new. It just used to be known as something else. An Americano.

Over top of the Americano entry was a black sticker with “Canadiano” on it. Along with a nice little red maple leaf next to it. Clearly, like, Balzac’s is another entity that has bought into all the anti-American, anti-Trump rhetoric being spewed by the government and state-funded media.

To say the least, I was disgusted.

And I wondered.

If they had a drink with China, an evil dictatorship which presents a sinister and grave threat to the entire world, in the name, such as a Chino or a Chinacano for instance, would they be so quick to rebrand it?

Perhaps yes. But only if the government told them to.
