Charity Begins at Home

June 1, 2025

Recently, a friend posted something interesting on Facebook. He posted it for public consumption, so I’d feel free to identify him if I wished, but for the sake of discussion, let’s just call him Bob.

This is my 83rd birthday and I hope you will give me a little time to express my sadness about what is happening to the US. I grew up in Canada and I am embarrassed about how this government has treated our closest neighbor and friend. I also hate how the US has decided to get out of our efforts to help the poor around the world. This administration is simply cruel and I am puzzled why and how so many seem to be supporting this effort. Please if you can tell me why?

Here’s how I should reply:

Dear Bob:

You want to know what’s really cruel? That’s when the government taxes its citizens to send money abroad to fund causes those same citizens may or may not support. Causes that aren’t actual aid programs, but in fact, thinly disguised money laundering schemes for billionaires and corrupt politicians. You do know the government doesn’t have any wealth of its own, don’t you? Every dollar it possesses it takes from citizens like you and I by force. You must have learned that in school somewhere. Perhaps you forgot. I know it’s been a long time since your school days.

So please stop bitching and complaining about how that big meanie Trump isn’t forcing your neighbor to donate to those causes. If you feel so strongly about it, do it yourself. There’s nothing stopping you or anyone else from donating to any cause, charitable or otherwise, in your country or on foreign soil. Dig out your credit card and go to town. Same goes for all your lefty friends who agree with you. In fact, take it a step further. Max out your card and make only the minimum payment every month. Rack up the kind of interest charges that would make a loan shark blush. That’s exactly what the government does. Then sticks you with the bill.

Put your money where your mouth is.

Charity begins at home.
