Turn Off the TV!
May 21, 2025
Yesterday, I was in the universe’s center, where I saw an old friend and caught up with him following a months-long absence. We walked around his neighborhood, then went back to his condo, where I sat at the kitchen table with him and his wife. Knowing that they like nature trails and exploring, I suggested Niagara Falls State Park as a potential destination.
“I’m not going to the U.S. as long as Trump is there,” she said. Your loss, I thought.
Then she asked if I had had any problems at the border.
“None whatsoever,” I replied.
“That’s because you’re white,” she said. “I’m Chinese by origin. Trump likes his own people. I don’t want to be mistreated.”
This would be a great time to point out that she and her husband had just returned from visiting China, one of the most brutal and sinister dictatorships on the planet and one with a brazen disregard for the most basic human rights. A Chinese citizen in this surveillance state could be forgiven for thinking he was in a souped-up version of 1930s Germany.
Trying to be as nice as I possibly could, rolling my eyes, I said, “Turn off the TV!”
