CPC Leader’s Advisory Survey

January 13, 2022

This week, I got an interesting mailing from the CPC. Most surprising is that they’re still calling themselves conservative. I’d more have expected them to announce plans for a formal merger with the Liberals and the NDP. After all, they’re pretty much indistinguishable from each other these days. Also surprising is that they’re soliciting opinions in what they call a “Leader’s Advisory Survey.” Commissioned by the Honorable Erin O’Toole, they say. Somehow I don’t think that O’Toole is really all that interested in what party members think of his leadership. But he’s going through the motions just to make it look he really gives a crap. For humor and interest, here’s what he’s asking along with what he probably should be asking:

1. Of the following options, please indicate your THREE priorities for Canada’s Conservatives in 2022. Please place a ‘1’ in the box next to your first priority, a ‘2’ in the box next to your second priority, and a ‘3’ in the box next to your third priority.

▢ Tackling Canada’s inflation crisis
▢ Fighting back against Cancel Culture
▢ Opposing internet censorship and free speech restrictions
▢ Supporting our resource development industries
▢ Aid for Afghan interpreters and allies who helped Canadian Armed Forces
▢ Getting a handle on illegal border crossings
▢ Getting Canadians back to work
▢ Supporting small businesses
▢ Getting the federal deficit under control
▢ Exposing Liberal corruption
▢ Other. Please explain: ____________

To this, I would add:
▢ Respect for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms
▢ Respect for the Criminal Code of Canada
▢ Bringing lawbreaking premiers and public health officials to justice before a military tribunal in a war crimes trial
▢ Defunding the CBC and ending the media bailout
▢ Giving Canadians private health care options
▢ Replacing Erin O’Toole as leader of the CPC with a strong, principled conservative

2. Thinking of your own conversations with friends, family members, and neighbors, would you agree the high cost of living, driven up by Liberal inflation, is the top public policy issue on the minds of Canadians right now?

▢ Yes
▢ No
▢ Unsure

Inflation is but one of many problems right now. But the restoration of freedom, democracy and the rule of law would solve a lot of them.

3. In your opinion, how important is it that Conservatives press the Trudeau Liberals for a full account of what went wrong with our Afghan withdrawal strategy and why so many interpreters and allies who worked with our Armed Forces have been left behind?

▢ Very important
▢ Somewhat important
▢ Somewhat unimportant
▢ Not at all important
▢ Unsure

I’m sorry for the Afghans. Really, I am. But aren’t there enough problems right here at home right now?

4. Of the following options, which best reflects your personal opinion on the “hybrid Parliament” enacted by the Liberals with support from the NDP?

▢ It was always just a way for Liberal Ministers to avoid scrutiny.
▢ It’s an important public health measure.
▢ It was a good idea in the last Parliament, but now the Liberals are exploiting it.
▢ I don’t care.
▢ Unsure

What difference does it make when the Conservatives are in lockstep with the Liberals anyway?

5. How concerned are you about Liberal efforts to regulate, control, and censor what Canadians are allowed to watch, read, and listen to on the internet?

▢ Very concerned
▢ Somewhat concerned
▢ Somewhat unconcerned
▢ Not at all important
▢ Unsure

Of course I’m concerned about it. And I’m just as concerned about the silence of the Conservatives.

6. In your opinion, how aggressive should the federal government be when it comes to reducing Canada’s budget deficit?

▢ Much more aggressive
▢ Somewhat more aggressive
▢ Somewhat less aggressive
▢ Not at all aggressive
▢ Unsure

Do you really need to ask party members this question?

7. On a scale of 1 to 5 (1=lowest, 5=highest), how would you rank the performance of the following members of Justin Trudeau’s Cabinet? Place a check mark or an ‘X’ next to the answer that best reflects your opinion.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau 1 ___ 2 ___ 3 ___ 4 ___ 5 ___
Finance Minister/Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland 1 ___ 2 ___ 3 ___ 4 ___ 5 ___
Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault 1 ___ 2 ___ 3 ___ 4 ___ 5 ___
Justice Minister/Attorney General of Canada David Lametti 1 ___ 2 ___ 3 ___ 4 ___ 5 ___
Innovation, Science and Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne 1 ___ 2 ___ 3 ___ 4 ___ 5 ___

See above. But how about adding a line asking to rate the performance of Opposition Leader Erin O’Toole.

8. In your opinion, how important is it for Conservatives to bypass the mainstream Ottawa media and take our message directly to Canadians?

▢ Very important
▢ Somewhat important
▢ Somewhat unimportant
▢ Not at all important
▢ Unsure

At this stage, it really doesn’t matter, since there’s so little difference between the Liberals and Conservatives. If the CPC were to become conservative again, then things might be different.

9. Do you agree that with Jagmeet Singh siding with the Trudeau Liberals on virtually everything, there is a new opportunity for Conservatives to win support from some traditional NDP voters, like private sector union members?

▢ Yes
▢ No
▢ Unsure

I’ll answer this question with a question. If you’re a conservative and an NDP candidate came to your door preaching fiscal responsibility and respect for civil liberties, would you be any more inclined to vote for him/her?

10. On a scale of 1 to 5 (1=lowest, 5=highest), how would you rank the performance of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet since the last federal election?

1 ___ 2 ___ 3 ___ 4 ___ 5 ___

You mean ‘0’ isn’t an option?

A personal message for Erin O’Toole (OPTIONAL): _________________________________

I’ll keep it short. Resign. Yesterday.
