New Year’s Day in the Core

January 1, 2022

Highlights and lowlights from a New Year’s Day stroll through the downtown core:

1. En route, I heard church bells going off at 7 am. I’m sure those who stayed up late last night really appreciated the wake-up call.

2. Also en route, there was a community resident bum moseying down Niagara Street playing rap music on his ghetto blaster loud enough to wake up the dead.

3. Near the corner of St. Paul and Geneva, a couple of community residents bums were busy playing crossword puzzles before picking up their stuff and moving on. But at least they were quiet.

4. Early morning scenes on St. Paul Street:

5. I’m voting for freedom and an end to medical tyranny . . .

5a. Has there ever been an era in history where the medical community has been so mistrusted?

6. The “Let it Glow” tree at St. Paul and James:

7. Something falls off the logic train between defunding the NRP and the availability of affordable low-cost housing . . .

8. Bright and early, a woman approached me and asked if I had any spare change. After I declined her funding request, she took off in the opposite direction and lit a cigarette. Later, a community resident bum who had obviously spent the night outside the library emerged from his slumber and also lit a cigarette. Once again, I always find it interesting how these people seemingly don’t have the money to put a roof over their heads, but they never have trouble finding money for smokes.

9. For some reason, Scotiabank seems to think that being associated with the NHL actually enhances their public image . . .

10. This restaurant owner lacks the “capicity” to spell correctly . . .

11. Someone after my own heart. But again, why are Canadians more concerned with what’s going on south (or in Niagara, east) of the border than they are about the increasingly frightening political situation right here at home?

12. The empty Market Square:

13. Cupcakes and a battery highlight this abandoned pile of trash . . .

14. Just leave the seafood order out at the curb. Someone will get to it eventually.

15. Another shot that just screams “downtown” . . .

16. Video from a brief walking tour of the Queenston Street neighborhood . . .
