Of Turtles and Frogs

August 8, 2023

In the midst of these turbulent times we find ourselves in, it is always comforting to know there are still some very, ahem, special people in our community who haven’t lost touch with what’s really important in the world.

Slow down for turtles.

Such as those who tirelessly campaigned to put up warning signs for turtles crossing the road. Those brave souls who dodged all the slings and arrows from those nervous Nellies who say there’s so many more important things to worry about. Inflation. Rising interest rates. Phooey on them, you say, and kudos to you for having the courage to call it like it is. Besides, budgets balance themselves. If our prime minister, a highly educated part-time drama teacher, says it, it must be true. And in any event, what could be more important than the lives of turtles? Precious wildlife whose natural habitat we have so callously invaded. They need our help. That’s why dedicated naturalists and activists selflessly give of their time to protect them. Showing compassion™* to the creatures who need it the most.

Frogs before profit.

Then there’s the committee that rose from the ashes, stood up to those evil housing developers and stopped them from running roughshod over the frog pond in Thorold. Frogs before profit. And who could argue? Certainly not Thorold city council. Or anyone else with a heart. The frogs had established their home there long before humans came around building homes. Remediating this pond is just the first step along a journey to truth and reconciliation with the frogs.

Those people who stand up for the turtles and the frogs are the ones who really care.

And we are so blessed to have them as part of our community.
