Over the River LXII

June 15, 2023

Highlights and lowlights from my 62nd two-wheeled visit to the Great State of New York:

1. Staggering around on the Haulage Road Recreational Trail in Niagara Falls (Canada) early this morning was an Asian guy who looked like he had just woken up after going on a bender last night.

2. On Victoria Avenue, also in Niagara Falls, Canada, not far from the bridge, was a black guy digging his bare hands into the moist dirt near a bus stop. When I got close by, he stood up, uttered a few choice profanities, then moseyed off.

3. Oddly, despite the early hour, there was a line of pedestrians waiting to get into Canada.

4. On the road on the Canadian side of the bridge was a prescription bottle someone must have tossed from their car. Whatever was in that bottle, it was undoubtedly something they did not want the CBP to find.

5. While waiting in line at U.S. Customs, I noted three bikes leaning against the building. I was a little concerned thinking they might have been targeting cyclists for some reason, but my experience couldn’t have gone any smoother.

6. It is noteworthy that, of my many two-wheeled crossings, this was the first time I had been served by a female officer on the U.S. side.

7. Walking through Niagara Falls State Park was a dude with a tattoo on his leg who was busy picking his nose.

8. Farther east, along the Shoreline Trail, was a guy standing by the river flapping his arms as if he was trying to fly.

9. Or just let the law of natural selection run its course . . .

10. Believe it or not, the washrooms at LaSalle Waterfront Park were actually open. Memorial Day seems to be the magic date for opening the seasonally available facilities.

11. Spotted this sign outside a bakery in Niagara Falls. The proprietor is obviously not a liberal . . .

12. But what if your name isn’t Michael?

13. A replica Tesla Coil in Gratwick-Riverside Park in North Tonawanda. Good thing this high “frequncy” oscillator isn’t “electrfied.”

14. Scenes along the trail through Niawanda Park and adjacent Isle View Park. Since my last visit, they’ve redone the pavement and even added a recharging station.

15. If memory serves me correctly, this guy was there in my last visit, though they’ve dressed him up a little . . .

16. Inside Wendy’s on Grand Island was a black woman dressed in rainbow colors from head to toe with the slogan “Love Wins” on her T-shirt. Give it a rest already. Nobody cares if you’re gay or not. What consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedrooms is their own business.

17. Is this still a thing?

18. Outside Kelly’s Country Store on Grand Island:

19. Damn, still can’t take your horse on the Interstate . . .

20. Serving me at Canadian customs was the same CBSA officer I had when returning from my last visit across the river.

21. Walking around the Niagara Falls (Canada) Bus Terminal was an Asian guy vaping while pushing his toddler in a stroller.
