Down the Stretch

October 18, 2022

Thoughts from the home stretch of the municipal election in St. Catharines:

1. Someone from Sal Sorrento’s team delivered a brochure to my mailbox the other day. Once again, regardless of his history with that person, he’s not too proud to ask for their vote.

1a. Loyal readers may recall that during the provincial election, Sal’s team came up and down my block delivering brochures as Sal kept a safe distance from the common folk. At my house, someone from his team left a brochure in my mailbox, then as she was leaving, spotted the New Blue sign. She promptly did an about-face, retrieved the brochure, then moved on to the next house.

2. According to someone in the Fairview Mall food court, regional council incumbent Brian Heit thinks Sal is a shoo-in. Sal does have name recognition. It might work for him and it might work against him.

3. I got another call from a city council hopeful running in Ward 4. This time, it was the Sendzik-approved appointee Robin McPherson, who’s trying to parlay another loss into a council seat. I wouldn’t vote for her anyway, but I don’t live in Ward 4. I couldn’t vote for her even if I wanted to.

4. Though I continue to get calls from Ward 4 candidates, I have yet to receive one from any of the candidates running in my ward. I have, however, been flooded with brochures, including three from Bill “How dare you question city staff” Phillips and two from Dawn “I love my pollinator gardens” Dodge. Neither incumbent seems to be in trouble, but as I’ve suggested, perhaps they haven’t been getting a lot of friendly greetings at the door.

5. I don’t recall seeing this many signs for Dodge in years past. I don’t get the attraction to her. If I wasn’t one to pay attention to local politics, I wouldn’t even know she was my councilor.

6. What’s scarier, the skeletons or the Dawn Dodge sign?

7. A brochure from the ghost of Jim Bradley landed up in my mailbox this past week. I was shocked that he’s stooping to actual campaigning. Such a thing must be demeaning for the career politician who has long since been imbued with a sense of entitlement to our vote.

8. Mayoral candidate Mat Siscoe Matler Sendzcoe says he wants to make government more accountable, but he curiously says nothing about tightening conflict of interest guidelines. You know, the same conflict of interest issue that allowed him to vote for himself when city council elevated him to a vacated regional council post.

8a. Methinks the race for mayor is going to be a little tighter than Siscoe Sendzcoe had hoped. He said he ran out of signs because of such high demand. More like he didn’t order very many because he didn’t think he’d need them.

9. I went to City Hall to vote in the advance poll recently, marking the third municipal election in which I’ve voted since my defection from the SPRM. I only hope my votes went to the candidates I selected, since they were again using the Dominion Democrat Voting machines. Getting rid of those voting machines is something I wish was someone at the municipal level had the courage to address.
