Pierre Poilievre in St. Catharines

April 22, 2022

Takeaways from last night’s rally featuring CPC leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre:

1. As expected, there was an overflow crowd, yet precious few chairs in the room. Most had to stand and they had to make several announcements asking if anyone would be willing to give up their seat. I feel for the elderly and infirm, but I arrived bright and early for the opportunity to be front and center. I wasn’t giving that up for anyone.

2. Among the attendees was Niagara West MP Dean Allison, who was also in attendance to support Roman Baber on the weekend. Oddly, Angry Donna Daffern, who seriously took offense when I told her I’d be voting conservative in the upcoming provincial election and not for our NDP premier, was there. Another odd sighting was Mark Stevens, the so-called conservative who was in attendance at the volunteer training session for Sal Sorrento, our local Doug Ford Party candidate. If you’re supporting Justin Trudeau’s lover-boy, why would you want to be seen at a rally for a principled conservative?

3. Before Pierre spoke, I was talking to someone who had come in from Port Colborne. When I mentioned that I was originally from Winnipeg, he said he had a lot of friends up there from when he worked in the Arctic near the tip of Baffin Island. Readers from this part of the world won’t get it, but the readers from the Old Country will no doubt be rolling their eyes as I did.

4. The full video from the event, including the introductions and the flag-waving on Ontario Street afterward:

5. Introducing Pierre was Graham Speck, the candidate for Niagara Center. Yet Krystina Waler, the candidate for St. Catharines, was nowhere to be found to welcome the man who will most likely be the next leader of her party and the next prime minister of Canada. She needs to go. Now.

6. There was not one single word of Quebecese spoken during the speech. The way it ought to be.

7. Following Pierre’s speech, anyone who wanted a picture with him was offered the opportunity to do so. I’d have liked to, but I wasn’t up for standing in line for an hour or more.
