As the sign suggests, the Selkirk Bridge is a lift bridge that opens to allow larger vessels to pass through. The bridge is also a low-lying bridge that is often closed in springtime due to high water levels on the Red River, forcing travellers to use the Lockport Bridge to the south or the “Bridge to Nowhere” to the north.
