Bong was the nation's highest-scoring air ace, having shot down 40 Japanese aircraft during World War II. The airport in Superior is named in his honor and, in Superior, US 2 will pass close by to the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center, located at the junction of US 53 near Barker's Island.
