Northbound view entering I-35 from Lake Avenue. Ahead is the first of four tunnels that I-35 will pass through on its way to its northern terminus at the intersection of 26th Avenue East and London Road, the southern terminus of MN 61. The design of I-35 between Mesaba Avenue and its current northern terminus that includes these four tunnels won “Excellence in Highway Design” awards in 1992 and 1994. At right are the tracks used by the North Shore Scenic Railroad and farther in the distance is the Lakewalk that follows the shore north from Canal Park. Photograph taken in April 2013. |

Northbound view showing the advance signage for Exit 259 - MN 61, I-35's last exit. Interestingly, “NORTH SHORE” is listed as the only control city for this exit. Though there are only a few smaller communities along the north shore within Minnesota, Thunder Bay, Ontario, located just over the Canadian border, is a sizable metropolitan area larger than Duluth, yet is not listed as a control city anywhere on I-35. By contrast in neighboring North Dakota, Winnipeg, Manitoba is listed frequently on I-29 signage as far as 80 miles south of the Canadian border. Photograph taken in April 2013. |
