The Jets acquired winger Randy Cunneyworth from the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of the blockbuster trade in the summer of 1989 that involved Jim Kyte and Andrew McBain. He spent only 28 games in a Jets' uniform before being traded to the Hartford Whalers in mid-season. He went on to play for several more seasons with the Whalers, Chicago Blackhawks, Ottawa Senators, and Buffalo Sabres and wound up his playing career after two seasons in the minor leagues with the Rochester Americans. He turned to coaching, where he worked in the minor leagues for several seasons and rose to an assistant in the NHL with the Atlanta Thrashers.
