Ron Ashton signed with the Jets in the summer of 1974 after being selected in the fourth round of the WHA Amateur Draft. A tough customer during his time in junior hockey, Ashton only scored one goal in his brief tenure with the Jets, but he made it count. His goal was the game-winner as the Jets defeated the Mariners in San Diego by a score of 6-4 on 28 December 1974. He also scored the Jets' first goal against an NHL opponent during the Jets' 3-1 loss to the Atlanta Flames in the 1974 exhibition season.
