Signed as a free agent, February 3, 1977. Traded by Jets to Calgary Cowboys as payment in lieu of Hexi Riihiranta's refusal to report to Calgary as part of an earlier trade involving Danny Lawson and Veli-Pekka Ketola, March 16, 1977.
The Jets signed Ron Ward from the defunct Minnesota Fighting Saints midway through the 1976-1977 season and he was impressive during his 14 games in a Jets' uniform. Unfortunately, the Jets were forced to part company with him on account of finances, since Hexi Riihiranta had refused to waive the no-trade clause in his contract and report to the Calgary Cowboys following an earlier trade. On the hook for Riihiranta's contract, the financially-strapped Jets then offered Ward and his high salary to the Cowboys as compensation in lieu of Riihiranta and the Cowboys gleefully accepted. Ward retired following the 1976-1977 season.
