Selected by Jets in General Player Draft, February 12, 1972. Traded to San Diego Mariners for cash and future considerations, January 6, 1975.
Ernie Wakely was the first Jets' first publicly announced signing and he teamed with Joe Daley in the Jets' first two seasons to form one of pro hockey's best tandems between the pipes. With three goaltenders under contract in 1974-1975, the Jets traded Wakely to the San Diego Mariners in January 1975 and he went on to play for three more WHA teams before bringing his distinguished playing career to an end following the 1978-1979 season.
