The Jets acquired veteran goaltender Ed Staniowski during the summer of 1981 and, together with Doug Soetaert, they stabilized the turbulent Jets' goaltending position and helped lead the Jets to their first NHL playoff berth in 1981-1982. He spent the following season split between the Jets and their farm team in Sherbrooke before being dealt to the Hartford Whalers in November 1983. He retired following the 1984-1985 season. Staniowski was originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 1975 and he spent most of his time in St. Louis in a backup role, where he carried the nickname of “Saturday Night Eddie”.
