Traded to Jets by New York Rangers for Winnipeg's 3rd choice in 1983 Entry Draft, September 8, 1981. Traded to Montreal for Mark Holden, October 9, 1984.
The Jets acquired veteran goaltender Doug Soetaert in September 1981 and he teamed with Ed Staniowski to stabilize what had been a revolving door between the pipes over the past two seasons. He helped backstop the Jets to their first NHL playoff appearance in 1981-1982 and spent three full seasons with the Jets before being dealt to the Montreal Canadiens in October 1984. After two seasons in Montreal, he wound up his playing career with his original team, the New York Rangers. Soetaert was originally drafted by the Rangers in 1975 and he spent six seasons in the Rangers' organization up and down between New York and their farm team. He went on to become a coach at the minor league level and a respected executive in junior hockey.
