The Jets selected defenseman Gord Smith from the Washington Capitals in the Expansion Draft and he played briefly for the Jets in 1979-1980 before winding up his playing career with three seasons in the minor leagues. Smith was originally drafted by the New York Rangers in 1969, but he did not see any NHL action until 1974-1975 as a member of the Capitals.
