Claimed by Jets from Montreal in Waiver Draft, October 5, 1981.
The Jets claimed veteran defenseman Serge Savard from the Montreal Canadiens in the Waiver Draft in October 1981 and General Manager John Ferguson coaxed Savard out of retirement to play for the Jets for two seasons. He retired for good following the 1982-1983 season. He wore his customary number 18 for most of his time as a Jet, but on 10 January 1982, against his former team, he was forced to wear #5 because former teammate Guy Lapointe stole his jersey from the Jets' locker room. John Ferguson issued #5 to Savard that night to let the visitors know who stole the jersey. Interestingly, Savard also scored his first goal as a Jet that same night.
