Following four stellar seasons at Bowling Green State University, the Jets signed winger John Markell late in the 1978-1979 season and he remained in the Jets' organization as they entered the NHL. He split the next two seasons between Winnipeg and the Jets' farm team in Tulsa before being traded to the St. Louis Blues during the summer of 1981. He played briefly with the Blues and Minnesota North Stars before winding up his playing career in Germany after the 1991-1992 season. He eventually became the head coach at Ohio State University and worked there for over a decade.
