The steady, stay-at-home defender signed with the San Jose Sharks during the summer of 1993 and was subsequently dealt to the Dallas Stars, where he finished his playing career following the 1996-1997 season. Lalor broke into the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens as an undrafted free agent and played parts of five seasons in their organization prior to being traded to the St. Louis Blues. Following two seasons with the Blues, he was traded to the Capitals, where he spent most of two seasons before being traded to the Jets.
