Traded to Jets by Detroit Red Wings for Jim Nill, January 11, 1988.
The Jets acquired winger Mark Kumpel from the Detroit Red Wings in January 1988 and after the 1987-1988 season, he went on to play four more years in the Jets' organization before ending his playing career in the minor leagues following the 1992-1993 season. Kumpel was originally drafted by the Quebec Nordiques and following four seasons at the University of Lowell, he made his NHL debut in 1984-1985.
