The Jets claimed gritty winger Dave Hunter from the Edmonton Oilers in the Waiver Draft prior to the 1988-1989 season. He spent part of that season with the Jets before being placed on waivers and reclaimed by his old team in January. He retired following the 1988-1989 season. He broke into the NHL with the Oilers in 1979-1980 and remained in Edmonton until being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in November 1987. On the day of the Waiver Draft, he was transferred back to his original team, only to be subsequently claimed by the Jets.
