Signed as a free agent, May 5, 1982. Traded to Montreal for Steve Penney and the rights to Jan Ingman, August 19, 1986.
The Jets signed goaltender Brian Hayward in May 1982 after he spent four seasons at Cornell University and he made his Jets debut in the 1982-1983 season. He blossomed in 1984-1985 when he backstopped the Jets to their finest NHL season, but his play tailed off the next year and the Jets dealt him to the Montreal Canadiens in August 1986. He spent four seasons with the Canadiens before finishing his playing career with the Minnesota North Stars and San Jose Sharks. After his retirement, he moved into the broadcast booth and worked as the color commentator for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
