Double Standards

August 26, 2024

With a potential strike at CP and CN Rail threatening to cripple the economy, the feds stepped in almost immediately, ordering the employees back to work and forcing arbitration to settle the dispute. Normally not one to applaud government intervention, I can understand why it was done. The railway pretty much has a monopoly and there is little in the way of alternatives for those dependent on them.

I couldn’t help but remember, however, that just before the war, the same federal government that is today telling us that this is an essential service sat back and did absolutely nothing during the illegal rail blockades. Protesters trespassed on and vandalized private property, bringing rail service to a halt for weeks while the Liberals simply shrugged their shoulders and acted like deer in headlights. There’s no easy answer to this, they said. Oh yes there was. It’s called law enforcement. But they just chose to allow the protesters to break the law. And when the blockade finally ended, not a single person was ever charged or held to account for the damage. All because it was a cause the Liberals supported.

Fast forward a few months. The government declared war on us. One of their illegal edicts was to prohibit gatherings of more than a few people. People who went out in public to protest these “health protection measures” or worshiped in a church were rounded up, arrested and charged as police officers disregarded their sworn oath to uphold the Constitution. Anyone remember Adamson’s BBQ in Toronto, where John Tory sent mounted police to shut them down? When later challenged in court, activist judges threw the law books away and sided with the government. Yet when a gathering was held in support of BLM, that was apparently OK. Justin Trudeau even joined them. Naturally, no one connected with those gatherings was ever charged. Once again, all because it was a cause the government supported.

These days, laws are enacted by governments not for our protection. Rather, they are enacted to give the government legal justification to harass and intimidate its political opponents.

So the next time someone tells you this is a free country, you can tell them they’re sadly mistaken.

Welcome to the Union of Canadian Soviet Republics, comrade.
