Circling the Drain

February 11, 2024

As is the case in many other countries around the world, the mainstream media in Canada has been circling the drain for some time now. Long before the war, in fact. Their overt left-wing bias and manipulation of facts and half-truths to sell a self-serving narrative instead of simply reporting the news have discredited the profession of journalism so badly that there’s more truth spoken on used car lots than there is on most newscasts. As a result, viewers and listeners turn to other sources, most notably independent media. With them go the advertising dollars which are necessary to keep the ship afloat.

Enter Justin Trudeau.

He scowls as he sees the talking heads who deliver his message being laid off left, right and center. So he digs into your pocket and mine to bail them out and enacts draconian legislation designed to “protect” Canadian content.

Ever so appreciative, they show their gratitude to their political masters by ramping up the propaganda. More lies. More manipulation. Which only turns more viewers and listeners off. With an ever-decreasing audience, more advertisers bail. And more “journalists” get their walking papers, just like what happened this past week with the layoffs at Bell Media stations.

Trudeau responds with more bags of stolen loot from the taxpayer.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Instead of propping up the legacy media, the handouts have only hastened the demise of an industry going by the way of the dodo bird. It is yet another instance of how government intervention ends up having the opposite of the intended effect.

In the words of a fellow libertarian, if the government were to declare a war on water, the Sahara Desert would be flooded.
