The Reckoning

August 23, 2025

I am pleased to announce the release of my latest book, The Reckoning, the third in the “The Killing List” series, featuring a broken-down, drug-addicted hooker hellbent on exacting revenge on her former clients.

Following is an excerpt from the first chapter:

Destinee Davis is standing by the window watching the fireworks go off over the Horseshoe Falls. Every time she sees them, she always admires what a good job they do. It’s quite the spectacle, she muses. And even though she’s been an on-again, off-again resident of Niagara Falls for the past few years, it seemingly never gets old. She’s seen them often enough from ground level too. Practically right in front of the falls at Table Rock and farther back near the zipline. The new attraction they put in to bilk the tourists out of even more of their money. Where they can take a selfie and post it all over social media while suspended from a thin wire several hundred feet above rocky cliffs. The eighty-dollar minute. Maybe it costs even more now. It’s been a while since she’s checked. But the fireworks look so much different from up on the 15th floor of the hotel at the Fallsview Casino. Much better, she thinks. She makes a mental note to rent a room for herself one of these days so she can spend more time enjoying the view. One of those times when they offer discounts for locals. The room is sure nice. Big queen-size bed. Soft mattress. Not like those dives she usually takes her johns to. Hard as a rock, some of them. There’s a big-screen TV too. Rainfall shower head in the bathroom. And there’s a spa and a pool available. The lap of luxury.

Too bad the room’s registered guest won’t be able to enjoy any of it, she muses. Because he’s probably stiff as a board by now.

It was so easy, she mutters as she looks over at the bed, where he’s lying so peacefully flat on his back. Bastard never knew what hit him. He thought he was going to get laid tonight. But instead, he got laid out.

She knew he’d be around this weekend. Every time the big pharmaceutical companies hold a convention, he’s always there. Just to be sure, she checked his social media accounts. As she expected, he bragged about it. “Niagara Falls, here I come!” he posted for all the world to see. But she really didn’t have to bother. Booze and boobs, both always available in ample quantities for the tourists, bring them out of the woodwork. Including him. Especially him. He and his buddies flooded into the club every time there was a big shindig going on. The place was packed like sardines in a tin can. They even had to bribe the fire inspectors to keep them quiet. It was a bonanza for the girls and the drug pushers. Christmas in July. The guys were all loaded and freely parted with their cash. It was an orgy of sex and drugs out on the floor. Whatever you wanted, whatever your pleasure, it was there and as much as of it as you could handle. Just as long you had the money. The cops were more than happy to turn a blind eye to it all. Some of them, in fact, were, and still are, among the club’s best customers. In some cases, it’s a perk of the job. Since they work all sorts of odd shifts, the poor wife sitting at home wouldn’t question why her husband is out in the middle of the night. Meanwhile, the guy is banging whores two at a time.

On this night, however, she didn’t need to pick him out of the club. She had him all to herself. As soon as she walked into the bar downstairs, she spotted him shooting the shit with his pals. Playing the role of a big shot to the hilt. Like he always does. Never hesitates to brag to everyone in the joint about all the people in high places he knows. I’m so important, in other words. But in this case, she didn’t have to wade into his posse of filth. All she had to do was take a seat at the end of the bar, nurse a drink for about 15 minutes and wait for him to pick her up. Sure enough, he took the bait. She knew he would. She’s the first to admit she’s not as attractive as she used to be. The hard living has taken its toll. The drugs. The liquor. The party life. And she’s been shagged more often than a dollar whore at a port of call. Even though she’s still in her mid-30s, she looks like someone who’s been collecting Old Age for a while now. There are wrinkles on her face you could park a truck in. Sometimes she hates the person she sees when she looks in the mirror. No amount of makeup and lipstick can cover it up. But flash some tits and ass and they still come running. Oh sure, she played hard to get. Told him she wasn’t interested. But he was persistent. Saying no just riles him up.

So after stroking his ego and making him feel as if he wooed her with his charm and made her an offer she couldn’t refuse, she agreed to go up to his room. Have a little fun, he said. Not that she was surprised at all, but he didn’t even seem to remember her. It was perhaps his last and biggest mistake. Because then he might have known what was coming.

Naturally, he didn’t object when she suggested a couple of drinks. To help put them in the mood, she said. He was already sloshed. But as she’s well aware, he can certainly hold his liquor. Just like those hockey players. There’s nothing more abused in the world than a hockey player’s liver. While she was fixing their drinks, he was busy digging into his stash of coke next to the sink in the bathroom. Getting a line for you too, he said. Which left her more than enough opportunity to slip something into his drink. When he was done with his line, he downed the drink in a New York minute. Didn’t suspect a thing. And he passed out just as quickly. Never to wake up again.
