Go Ahead, Sal, Make My Day

This afternoon, my phone rang. Normally, I don’t answer calls from strange numbers. I’m not one of those people who think you have to answer the phone because someone calls. Or that you have to answer the door because someone knocks. But I digress. This number, however, was one I recognized. So I picked up my phone.

On the other end of the line was Sal Sorrento, the newly minted candidate for the Doug Ford Party (formerly the Ontario PC Party). He had called days earlier. I was hoping he’d be brave enough to call back. He did. And this time, I didn’t miss the opportunity to give him a piece of my mind.

After some initial pleasantries (I had met him previously, he said he remembered me), the exchange went something like this:

Sorrento: “Do you know why I’m calling?”

Me: “Yeah, you’re running for the Doug Ford Party. And I’d rather rip my ballot in half than vote for Doug Ford.”

Without missing a beat, he continued with his spiel, talking over me as if he wasn’t listening.

Me: “Excuse me, did you just listen to what I had to say?”

He stopped.

Me: “I’d rather rip my ballot in half than vote for Doug Ford. That man is a criminal. When this war is over, he should be put on trial.”

After some babbling, he said, “I’m just doing the best I can. I’m doing this for my community.”

Me: “If you cared about your community, you’d be running for New Blue.”

Note: I was one of the original signatories in New Blue’s application to get certified with Elections Ontario and I took out a membership as soon as the portal was available. I also donated to New Blue, marking the first time I had ever donated to a political party.

More babbling from Sorrento.

Me: “Doug Ford must have promised you something for running for him.”

Sorrento: “No one has promised me anything.”

Me: “Like hell. After the election and after you lose your council seat, if Ford is re-elected, we’re going to hear about you getting appointed to some cushy provincial job.”

The call ended soon and abruptly.

To say the least, I don’t think that was the reaction he was expecting. But he should have been expecting it. The biggest victims of Doug “Closed for Business” Ford’s illegal war of aggression against his own people are those in his own party. Those who volunteered for him. Those who donated their hard-earned money. Those who knocked on doors.

Methinks this isn’t the last time Sorrento is going to get an earful. He needs to get used to it.

Hell hath no fury like a voter scorned.
