Hollow Victory

January 22, 2026

Last week, a bit surprisingly, a federal appeals court upheld a lower court ruling declaring that the use of the Emergencies Act to put down the Freedom Convoy protest in Ottawa was illegal and violated the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. I say surprisingly, not because of the ruling itself, but rather because the judiciary is just as politically biased as Canada’s governing junta otherwise known as the Liberal Party of Canada. In fact, one of the activist judges who sits on the Supreme Court recently openly condemned the Freedom Convoy. But I digress.

Great, I thought.

But where are the consequences?

Where’s the arrest warrant for Justin Trudeau, who invoked the Emergencies Act?

Where’s the arrest warrant for Chrystia Freeland, his second-in-command, who called the protesters “terrorists?”

Where are the arrest warrants for each and every MP who voted to continue the use of the Emergencies Act?

The message is clear.

If you or I do something illegal, there are real-world consequences. We’d be arrested, and if convicted, we’d go to prison. Unless, of course, you’re a member of a special interest group. Then you can do as you please. But again, I digress.

But if a government official does something illegal and abuses his or her powers to violate the highest law in the land, big deal. Nothing to see here. Move on. It’s as if there’s some kind of diplomatic immunity in play.

Which makes it a virtual certainty that something like this can and will happen again in our lifetime.
