On the heels of the upcoming municipal election, the first of what I’m sure will be a ton of brochures hit my mailbox yesterday. This one came from the so-called Spencer Bellows-DeWolfe, who’s running for council in Grantham, seeking to unseat one of the entrenched incumbents Bill “How dare you question City staff” Phillips and Dawn “I love my pollinator gardens” Dodge, both of whom have long since become walking endorsements for term limits.
Having previously failed to ride his late mother’s coattails into a council seat in Ward 4 when he ran on little more than the Bellows name, you’d think Spencer would try a different tack this time around. Such as giving a detailed platform to sell voters and votresses on why they should support him. And maybe running on his own name instead of his late mother’s.
But instead, he came up with this:
Completely devoid of substance, all it offers is another tired, old reminder of the Bellows name he’s trying to milk for all it’s worth. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again. Yawn.
Mixed in with that, however, is a curious slogan.
Vibrant and stagnant.
Huh?
I must admit, I’ve seen a lot of political ads over the years, but I can’t say I’ve ever seen or heard of a candidate describing him or herself as “stagnant.” That’s definitely a first.
Now maybe he meant that line to get tongues wagging. There are those who subscribe to the belief that when you’re seeking public office, there’s no such thing as bad publicity. But somehow, I don’t think this guy’s that clever.
In this case, all it did was give this voter yet another reason not to support him.
As if I needed one.
