Not surprisingly, the “Fighting” Moose were more noted for fighting than for anything else they did on or off the ice. Many notorious fighters came and went through the cavernous and deserted halls of the decrepit Winnipeg Arena in pursuit of the unofficial Jason Shmyr Award, named in honor of the legendary Jason Shmyr, who racked up a then-record 18 fights in 1998-1999. Shmyr was the first “Fighting” Moose to attract a following of his own among the Moose's largest demographic, 8-12-year-old boys, who would race to the ice, pound on the glass and yell “Fight! Fight! Fight!” as soon as tempers began raging.
