Signed as a free agent, August 18, 1995.
The Jets signed centerman Mike Stapleton as a free agent in August 1995 and he spent one season with the Jets before moving with the team to Arizona. There, he spent three more seasons until playing two more NHL seasons split among three clubs. He wound up his playing career with stops in Finland and Sweden. Stapleton was originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in 1984, the team his father Pat once starred for. He spent a number of seasons in the Blackhawks' organization and also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers before joining the Jets. Though his father never played for the Jets, his name was frequently linked to the Jets during his time in the WHA and he was once rumored to be a candidate for the general manager's position that eventually went to John Ferguson.
