#35 - Markus Mattsson

Markus Rainer Mattsson
Position: Goaltender
Born July 30, 1957 in Suoneiemi, Finland
Height: 6' 0" Weight: 180
Rights traded to Jets by Houston Aeros for future considerations, June, 1977. Traded to Quebec Nordiques for future considerations, February, 1978. Traded to Jets by Quebec Nordiques for future considerations, March, 1978. Reclaimed by New York Islanders prior to Expansion Draft, June 9, 1979. Claimed as a priority selection, June 9, 1979.
The Jets signed goaltender Markus Mattsson during the summer of 1977 and he spent most of the 1977-1978 season as the third-string goaltender behind regulars Joe Daley and Gary Bromley. The Jets traded him to the Quebec Nordiques in February 1978, but after a brief and disastrous tenure in Quebec, the Jets later re-acquired him on account of an injury to Daley. After a difficult rookie season, Mattsson carried the bulk of the load for the Jets in 1978-1979 and showed much promise, though he did not see any action in the playoffs as the Jets captured the AVCO Cup championship. The Jets protected his rights going into the NHL, but he did not develop as they had hoped and he split the next two seasons between the Jets and their farm team in Tulsa. After spending the entire 1981-1982 season in Tulsa, he moved on and spent time with the Minnesota North Stars and Los Angeles Kings before returning to his native Finland to wind up his playing career.
