The Jets shocked the hockey world when they signed superstar winger Bobby Hull at the corner of Portage and Main in June 1972 following his 15 stellar seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks. He remained with the Jets for six full seasons and retired early in the 1978-1979 season, only to return briefly the following year. Hull ended his playing career in 1979-1980 as a member of the Hartford Whalers. He led the Jets two AVCO Cup championships, served as the Jets' first coach, and was part of the ownership group that purchased the team in 1978. He was a six-time All-Star and was twice named the WHA's most valuable player. The Jets retired Hull's number 9 in February 1989.
