Winnipeg's 1st choice, 17th overall, in 1992 Entry Draft. Signed with Jets, August 28, 1992. Traded to Detroit Red Wings with Bob Essensa for Tim Cheveldae and Dallas Drake, March 8, 1994.
The Jets chose defenseman Sergei Bautin with their first-round selection in the 1992 Entry Draft. Described by General Manager Mike Smith as the “Jack Tatum of Soviet hockey,” Bautin spent two seasons with the Jets before being traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Bautin's tenure with the Red Wings lasted one game and after two seasons spent mostly in the minor leagues, he finished his career with stops in Sweden, Germany, and Russia.
