Selected by Jets in General Player Draft, February 12, 1972. Claimed by Edmonton Oilers in Intra-League Draft, June, 1976. Signed as a free agent, May, 1977.
Larry Hornung became the sixth player to sign with the Jets when he put his signature on a three-year contract in June 1972. A key component of the Jets' defense corps during his first four seasons with the Jets, he helped lead them to two appearances in the AVCO Cup finals. Hornung was an assistant captain on the 1975-1976 team that won the AVCO Cup and was one of only five original members of the team on the championship roster. He was claimed by the Edmonton Oilers in the Intra-League Draft that summer and was traded to the San Diego Mariners in mid-season before rejoining the Jets in 1977-1978. His second stint with the Jets lasted only 19 games and he retired in December 1977. He was a three-time All-Star and a Second Team All-Star in 1972-1973. Prior to joining the Jets, he had played parts of two seasons with the St. Louis Blues. Hornung passed away in May 2001.
